“Caveat Subscriptor”

“Let the signer beware,” cautions this legal principle, which holds you to the terms of any contract you sign because the law presumes, unless you can prove otherwise, that you knew and understood what you were agreeing to.

Excuses like “I didn’t read the contract” or “I didn’t understand it” will hold no water unless you can establish a legal ground, such as fraud, misrepresentation or duress, or a reasonable, justifiable and material mistake on your part (carelessness or “signing blind” doesn’t qualify!). The Consumer Protection Act or National Credit Act might also come to your rescue with certain types of contract, but why risk it? Rather be safe and sign only if you fully understand and agree to everything!
